It’s one of the questions we hear most often at the studio. The honest answer: it depends on your dog. Coat type, lifestyle and skin health all play a part, and bathing too often can be just as unhelpful as not bathing enough.
A simple starting point
For most healthy dogs, a bath every four to six weeks keeps the coat clean without stripping the natural oils that protect the skin. From there, adjust based on how your dog actually lives.
- Short, smooth coats (Beagles, Boxers): every 6–8 weeks is usually plenty.
- Double coats (Huskies, Golden Retrievers): every 6–8 weeks, with regular brushing in between.
- Curly or long coats (Poodles, Doodles, Shih Tzus): every 3–4 weeks to prevent mats.
- Adventurers who swim, roll or dig: rinse as needed, full shampoo less often.

Signs it’s time for a bath
Rather than sticking rigidly to a calendar, watch for the cues. A greasy feel when you run your hand along the back, a lingering smell, visible dirt at the skin, or more scratching than usual are all good reasons to book in.
Healthy skin is the foundation of a beautiful coat. The right shampoo matters more than how often you bathe.

Choose a gentle shampoo

Human shampoo is too acidic for a dog’s skin. Look for a pH-balanced, soap-free formula. Oatmeal-based shampoos are a lovely choice for sensitive or dry skin because they soothe while they clean.
Don’t skip the drying
Damp undercoat can lead to hot spots and that “wet dog” smell. Towel off thoroughly, then use a cool dryer setting while brushing through. If your dog finds dryers stressful, our groomers use low-noise equipment and plenty of breaks.
