Brushing Basics: Keeping Coats Tangle-Free Between Visits

Cozy Pup in a Sunlit Living Room

Regular brushing is the single best thing you can do for your pet’s coat between grooming appointments. It removes loose hair, prevents painful mats and gives you a chance to spot lumps, ticks or sore skin early.

Pick the right brush

Wooden detangling brush
  • Slicker brush: great all-rounder for medium and long coats.
  • Undercoat rake: essential for double-coated breeds during shedding season.
  • Bristle or rubber brush: perfect for short coats and a glossy finish.
  • Wide-tooth comb: your final check for hidden tangles.

A calm, five-minute routine

  1. Choose a quiet moment when your pet is relaxed, ideally after a walk.
  2. Start with areas they enjoy, such as the back and shoulders.
  3. Brush in the direction of growth, working in small sections.
  4. Hold the hair at the base when working through a knot, so you don’t pull the skin.
  5. Finish with a treat and plenty of praise.

Stubborn mats are best left to a professional groomer.

When to call in the professionals

If a mat is tight to the skin, please don’t try to cut it out with scissors. It’s very easy to nick the skin underneath. Book a groom instead and we’ll remove it safely and comfortably, then show you the best tools for your pet’s coat.
