A first groom is a big moment, for your pet and for you. With a little preparation at home, that first visit can set the tone for a lifetime of calm, happy appointments.
1. Start handling early
Gently touch your pet’s paws, ears and muzzle every day, rewarding them with treats. Pets who are used to being handled find nail trims and ear cleaning far less surprising.
2. Book a short introductory visit
For puppies or nervous pets, a 20-minute “meet and greet” with a quick bath and brush is the perfect introduction. Shorter sessions build confidence without overwhelming them.

3. Go for a walk first
A good walk before the appointment burns off extra energy and gives your pet a chance to go to the toilet. Calm pets enjoy the experience more and the groom is quicker, too.
4. Keep goodbyes short and cheerful
Pets pick up on our emotions. A quick, upbeat goodbye tells them there’s nothing to worry about, and long, anxious farewells can do the opposite.
5. Reward and celebrate
When you pick your pet up, make a fuss of them and offer a favourite treat. Ending on a happy note helps them remember the groom as a good experience.
Every pet moves at their own pace. We’d always rather take a break than rush a nervous first-timer.
